Mechanical Keyboard Love Affair

December 16th, 2016

My first mechanical keyboard was a full-size, pink Filco Majestouch-2 with Cherry MX Blue switches. Let’s just say I fell in love with first use. Not only is it a gorgeous keyboard, it started my whole love affair with mechanical keyboards.

There’s just something special about typing on a mechanical keyboard versus your standard membrane keyboard. For me, there was something entrancing about feeling how responsive the keys are to the touch. There is something inherently gratifying when hearing and feeling that tactile feedback click. It was strange to adjust to at first, but I can definitely say that I noticed an increase in typing speed thanks to the reduced amount of force needed to actuate a key.

I’ve had my Filco keyboard for… six years now? I’ve never had an issue with it until recently, where I’m pretty sure one the switch in one of the CTRL keys happened to get misaligned, causing the key to struggle with registering key presses. I haven’t gotten around to fixing it (which I will), but that keyboard had me pretty convinced I would spend the rest of my life using Cherry MX Blue switches for the rest of my life.

That viewpoint changed within the past few years.

One thing I’ve always wanted out of a keyboard was that LED lighting, particularly after acquiring an Alienware laptop. I just loved the customization and the colors. My Filco was as standard as they come, with the only lights in place were for the lock keys. Of course, when Razer’s BlackWidow Chroma came out, Tyler and I were pretty quick to grab ’em.

Razer’s BlackWidow Chroma had the LEDs that I wanted; however, they didn’t have Cherry MX Blue switches. Didn’t really matter in the long run, though. The Razer Green switches in the BlackWidow Chroma had a very similar feel to the Cherry MX Blue switches, and they still had that audible tactile bump that I’ve grown to love. I have my BlackWidow Chroma connected to my home rig, and I love it all the same.

As for my Filco keyboard, I brought it to work. My coworkers commented on it when I first brought it there, even though my work is no stranger to mechanical keyboards. However, most people who also had mechanical keyboards also opted for switches of the silent variety. However, people did tend to comment that my keyboard was rather loud compared to everyone else’s keyboards. People adapted, though, and things were fine.

Well, that was until that one switch started having issues. It wasn’t really that big of a deal since it was just that CTRL key (and keyboards have two of them), but I was so adjusted to how I would work on documents that having to reprogram those processes were painful.

So, what to do? For one day, I settled for using my work laptop’s keyboard. Why one day? Because I couldn’t stand it. Constant typos and keys not always registering because of my light typing… I wanted to cry.

I ended up taking the plunge and ordering another keyboard. Sure, I could have toted my Razer back and forth every day, but that was a hassle I didn’t want to deal with. As for a brand new keyboard, I wanted to stick to a full-size keyboard since I used both ten key and the arrow keys frequently in my job. Also, I really wanted to try out a keyboard with Cherry MX Green switches. While I love Cherry MX Blue switches, I still found myself bottoming out my keys. Cherry MX Blue switches worked really well for me when I was constantly typing things, but when I was editing, I was bottoming out my keys left and right. Cherry MX Green switches have a higher actuation force, so I was interested in seeing how that would help with the whole bottoming out.

Even though I ordered my keyboard and had it shipped a bit faster than normal, I wasn’t sure how work was gonna go if I had to type on my laptop keyboard until it came in. Lucky for me, Tyler ended up getting a new mechanical keyboard himself, so he graciously gave (or let me steal) his Corsair K70 RGB RAPIDFIRE in the meantime. This particular keyboard has Cherry MX Silver switches.

Cherry MX Silver switches are similar to Cherry MX Red switches in the sense that they’re linear. They lack the same kind of tactile bump and audible feedback of the Cherry MX Blue and Green switches. While I’ve never regularly used a linear switch keyboard, I have messed around with Tyler’s linear switch keyboards. I always ended up missing the feel and the sound of my Cherry MX Blue switches. I was surprised to find that I really, really liked how the Cherry MX Silver switches feel.

The Cherry MX Silver switches have a shorter actuation point and travel distance than what I’m used to. I kind of like that feel a lot more than I thought I was going to. One other selling point for me was that it feels like there is a bit more resistance to the keys than my Filco. I know I looked it up at one point in time, but in general, the keys feel a lot more firm than the Cherry MX Blues (of course, I have to take in account the fact that my Filco is significantly more broken in than the Corsair). Combine all of that with the fact that my coworkers are no longer driven crazy by the loud clacking sound of my keyboard, all in all, I think that this keyboard is perfect for me at work.

So much for the other keyboard I had coming in (a Ducky One Orange Legends with Cherry MX Green switches).

When it comes to mechanical keyboards, I always tell people to try them out before they buy one. Get a feel for it. Try out different switches, if you can. A lot of commercial gaming keyboards are made with mechanical switches, so you can go somewhere, like Best Buy, and see how things feel. Another thing I recommend is purchasing a switch tester. It’s a cheap and easy way to see how different types of mechanical switches feel. Also, do your research! r/mechanicalkeyboards has a lot of good information, and a lot of people are incredibly helpful on there, too. There are a ton of different places to purchase mechanical keyboards, and there are a lot of ways to customize them, too. Different switches, different keyboard layouts, different keycaps…the world is your oyster.

I recommend mechanical keyboards because I don’t suffer from nearly as much hand/wrist strain as I used to. These keyboards can help you adjust to typing lighter and improving typing speeds. When it comes to computers, keyboards are something you frequently use–why not buy yourself a quality one that will last you quite a while? Sure, it’s a larger investment than simply using a laptop keyboard or that cheapie keyboard, but it’ll last you a while. Hell, I used to go through keyboards a lot. And now? I solely used my Filco for six years, and only now am I having minor (but fixable!) issues.

Maybe one of these days I’ll have to go and take pictures of all the keyboards Tyler and I both have. Then again… there are more on the way, haha. One of these days. ^^

September 1st, 2016

Well, I haven’t written in here in a while. Again. Oops.

Made some updates to my sidebars/information since so much time has passed. Set some goals, as well.

  • More Posts. I was doing so well, and then I got off track. I need to write more in other avenues than my personal journal and my bullet journal.
  • More Pictures. This feature is something my posts, in general, are lacking. So much text and nothing to break it up. So… let’s take more pictures!

Yeeeeeep. There are some goals for ya.

Anyways…I’m gonna be leaving in less than eight hours to Colorado for an anime convention and visiting friends. NDK! Haven’t been there since I started this blog. :3

I’ll post when I get back~! <3

Skincare Update!

March 18th, 2016

I’ve spent the last few weeks messing around with all the different skin care products I got from Glow Recipe and Memebox, another Korean beauty product website. I haven’t got to try everything I’ve bought (and oh man, did I buy a lot), but out of what I tried, there are quite a few products that I really, really love.

I’m a big fan of Memebox. While you can buy individual products from them, the part that gets me are their boxes. Instead of subscribing to a box program where you get random items every month, you aren’t required to subscribe to Memebox. Instead, they offer collections of Korean beauty products in themed boxes that you can choose to purchase. It’s a great way to try out new products for a good price! If you use this referral link, you’ll get a 20% discount on your first purchase!

Anyways, on to the good stuff.

Cleansers

I’ve found some really awesome cleansers to use in the morning, but I still have yet to find something good to get my waterproof makeup off in the evening. Even with some of the cleansers I’ve tried with my Clarisonic Mia2, I still end up with a layer of stuff on my face. Not cool. I’m thinking of getting an oil cleanser, which is meant to take your makeup off before you wash your face. I’ll let you all know when I try one/find one.

As for washing my face in the morning, I’ve been trying out this powder cleanser that I really like. I didn’t even know there was a thing like powder cleansers. It comes in a bottle as (obviously) a powder. You pour a little bit into wet hands, build up a lather, and then use it to clean your face. I like it a lot because you don’t feel like you’re using too much. It’s easy to eyeball how much you need once you use it a few times. I feel like I’m never gonna run out. I’ve been using Papa Recipe’s White Flower Clear Up Enzyme Powder Cleanser. My skin has been doing great, so no complaints from me!

Toners

I mentioned that I was using a toner whose name I couldn’t remember in my last post. I looked at the bottle when I got home, and it was Phytomer’s Rosée Visage Toner Cleansing Lotion. It smells really good and it does its job, but I was interested in branching out and trying new things. I’ve been going back and forth between two different toners.

The first one is Bathhouse Soapery’s Aloe Toning Tonic. I love the way this stuff smells, and I like the spray bottle. When used in my normal cleansing routine, I apply it to a cotton ball and apply it to my skin. Sometimes if my skin needs a bit of a pick me up, I just spritz it on my face and let it dry. It’s a lot cheaper than Phytomer’s toner, and it works just as well. I’m a fan!

The second one is an interesting Korean beauty product: Benton’s Snail Bee High Content Skin (Toner). What a name, right? That’s because it has two special ingredients: snail slime filtrate and premium bee venom. Yikes! I’m not sure it would be good for someone who is allergic to bees, but thankfully, I am not. Even with this bizarre ingredient list, this toner is far from gross. It smells great, and it works great! If I had to stick to one toner, it would be this one. It’s been great for my face, and it’s the cheapest of these three toners. 😀 Woo!

Ampoule

What is an ampoule, exactly? For a detailed overview, check out this blog post from Glow Recipe! An ampoule is like an extra treat for your skin between your toner and your moisturizer. I’ve noticed that it gives my skin a healthy glow that I haven’t had with my normal skin care routine. I’m still relatively new to the whole ampoule/serum thing, but I’ve been trying a couple out.

The first one I tried was Lee Ji Ham’s Vita Propolis Ampoule. This stuff is really nice. It doesn’t look like a lot since it comes in a tiny bottle. Honestly, though, you don’t need a whole lot. I can usually get away with using what is on the outside of the dropper and a drop or two from the dropper. It goes on light and smooth, and it gives your skin a fresh glow. I use it during the day.

The other one I tried was an all-in-one ampoule: Shara Shara’s Honey Bomb All in One Ampoule. An all-in-one ampoule can be used in place of a toner, serum, and moisturizer. I still like using a toner before I use this one, but if I use it in the morning, I only use it as an ampoule/serum. At night, I tend to slather it on and sleep in it, and it does make my skin feel softer in the morning. This stuff comes in a huge bottle, and you don’t need very much of it, even if you slather it on. This bottle will last you a long, long time!

Moisturizer

The only moisturizer I’ve tried out of all my new goodies is Benton’s Snail Bee High Content Lotion. It came in the themed Memebox with the toner. I love this stuff! It leaves my skin feeling fresh, soft, and dewy. It’s a great way to prep your skin before primer and foundation. Even with the snail slime filtrate and premium bee venom, this one smells good, too. Just don’t think about the weird things going on your face. Don’t worry, it’s good for your skin. Just a little bit goes a long way!

Future Updates

I still have a lot more products I haven’t even tried yet, so I’ll keep you all updated as I go. I have more stuff coming in, too (help me, I can’t stop), so those will get a spot on here, as well. I’m thinking of doing some makeup posts on here, too. Maybe I can get some tips from some of my lovely Makeup Artist friends on here, too!

I think I’m going to start taking pictures of the stuff I’ve been using. I think these posts could use some pictures to liven the place up. So look for those in the future!

Thanks for reading! <3

Retail Fascination

March 2nd, 2016

I originally wrote this post at the tail end of last year. I got so much written, then I decided to put it on hold since I was burned out and didn’t want to end it on such an abrupt note. I really like how this post came out, so I’m gonna post it anyways, months later, with something of a conclusion added today.

Although I no longer work in the line of retail, it still fascinates me to observe interactions between company/customers and company/employees. Having worked quite a variety of jobs, I’m starting to really see what makes some enterprises more successful than others. Today, though, I find myself fascinated by a public forum discussion about a company through the eyes of a jilted customer.

This forum allows for customers to proffer praise or vent frustrations on their experiences with various companies in the reptile trade. It allows for consumers to assess the reputation of a company through customer opinion. The post that caught my attention was one by an upset individual who was denouncing a particular company through his experience. The majority of the tales on this forum are convincing from the start, with feedback from other members of the community and even companies themselves shining a light on the entire story.

The tale begins with several intense emotions: frustration at being deceived by the actual size of a purchased reptile; rage that the purchased reptile killed a resident reptile; sadness with the loss of the resident reptile because of the purchased reptile; and disgust with the lack of care from the establishment that sent the purchased reptile. Logistically speaking, the range of emotions are understandable; however, as someone somewhat experienced in reptile husbandry, the post set off several warning flags in my mind.

First, if you purchased a reptile from a company and are not satisfied with what you received, you need to immediately take this up with the company. Even before that, I would think you would try to have an extensive amount of communication with the company before you bring an exotic animal into your home. While not all companies are forthcoming, there are many companies and breeders willing to satisfy all your questions and requests for information. Especially when it comes to reptiles, I find it the utmost importance that an owner educates themselves as extensively as possible about any pet or companion they have or plan to obtain. If asking about the particular animal, I do recommend finding out more information about its behavior or feeding habits. As for the animal, you should manage your own research, too. If you are not comfortable with the information (or lack thereof) you receive, you can always approach another seller/breeder/company. As a customer, you have the right to take your business to a place that satisfies your needs. As far as this disgruntled customer goes, it doesn’t seem like he takes issue with the company until serious problems come into play.

The first big warning bell started when he mentioned he only had one cage with other female reptiles in it. Pretty much any reputable reptile source will tell you that when you receive a new reptile, you should quarantine it. Why? You don’t know the overall health of the animal you receive. You don’t know if it may have diseases or parasites that are not visible to the naked eye. By bringing in an unknown quantity and housing it with your other pets, you are putting your entire collection at risk. Where was this new reptile supposed to go besides in the cage with the two other established females? Bad news.

While some reptiles can exist harmoniously with others, more often than not, you have to house them separately. Yes, even if you’re planning on breeding. Even if they’re the same type and gender. A Google search can tell you this right off the bat. Having the females in the same cage is uncomfortable enough, but then introducing a new male to the same cage? Really bad news.

Of course, I’m not surprised when tragedy strikes. The customer starts lamenting about having to get a new cage for the male, and, for whatever reason, he decides to house the male with the females until he can get said cage. The new male gets aggressive and ends up killing one of the females. By this point, I’m already seeing red for all the aforementioned ways he could have avoided this problem.

The angry customer then grows upset when he tells the company about what happens, and he doesn’t get the response that he wants. He begins to throw a tantrum, stating that the company he purchased the male from is in the wrong because they offered him a refund if he shipped the animal back. That it’s their fault he had to buy a whole new enclosure for this reptile that was bigger than advertised. So he advises others to avoid purchasing from this company because they’re liars and their customer service is abysmal.

The stage is set; other players proceed to enter the floor.

With the desire to avoid coming off aggressive or harsh, other forum members offer their sympathies but mention that the purchase of a new reptile requires quarantine for this very reason. They also mention that this particular species of reptile should really be housed individually, as these issues are known to arise. The other forum goers are curious for more information while providing advice for future situations.

At this point, I would like to note that I find it fascinating when people who were searching for sympathy for an error of their own doing turn defensive and lash out at people trying to help. The once (somewhat, in this case) credible story starts falling apart as his defensive statements turn contradictory and even more poor animal husbandry behaviors come to light.

As you probably have already assumed, that reaction is exactly what happened. In order to condense the story, I will dissect the general statements.

  1. “It’s not their fault that the purchased reptile killed a resident reptile, but they still lied about the size.”
    1. You had the opportunity to return it after you received it and it wasn’t as advertised.
    2. You should have had a separate enclosure for the reptile before or at the time of your purchase.
    3. A smaller reptile would not have guaranteed the avoidance of this tragedy.
  2. “I DIDN’T PUT THEM IN THE SAME TANK. I PUT THEM ON THE FLOOR SO THEY COULD MEET. THAT’S QUARANTINE.”
    1. No, that is not quarantine.
    2. Way to further stress out an already-stressed-from-shipping reptile.
  3. “When I sell reptiles, if something like this happened, I would give them a full refund and something in compensation for the issues.”
    1. With your current husbandry practices, I hope you don’t breed reptiles in the future.
    2. If you run a business, you can dictate how you run it (within reason). Do not expect another company to uphold practices that YOU want.
  4. “I wanted a young reptile because I don’t know how to care for adult reptiles yet!”
    1. I don’t even have words for this one.

The further I go in the thread, the less I want to say because it just gets more and more ridiculous. He says quarantine is stupid since “reptile STDs” are bullshit (I don’t even… no one said anything about STDs. If you don’t know reptiles can get sick, why do you even have them?). Anyone that doesn’t support his side ends up being talked down to, called stupid, or told they just don’t understand the situation.

Sigh.

This kind of situation always prickles my skin, especially with all the restrictions happening in the exotic reptile trade. The majority of negative situations that have happened with larger snakes are often due to poor husbandry practices and the general lack of knowledge when it comes to exotic animals. We were all new to the hobby at one point or another. The digital age has definitely helped when it comes to information accessibility.

At the end of the day, all I can say is that when it comes to exotic reptiles (and exotic animals in general), there is always going to be a higher level of care involved. Vet bills aren’t cheap. You won’t have as wide availability of information as you would with cats or dogs. Some exotic animals require very specific habitats (humidity, quarantine, heat, etc.). There is a lot of learning and expense that comes from owning exotic animals, and if you put the time and effort in to get it right, you WILL have a unique companion for years to come.

As far as it goes when it comes to retail, we have to remember that there is a limited level of liability when it comes to animals. Know what you’re getting into before purchasing something. Do your research. Understand what limitations you have if you end up with a sick, dying, or dead animal. Understand what is expected of you when bringing an animal home. Understand what policies companies/breeders have in place beforehand, and try to understand why they would have these policies in place.

I would often say “just use your brain,” but apparently a lot of people are incapable of doing that much.

Adventures in Skin Care

March 2nd, 2016

Recently, I have been taking a renewed interest in taking care of my skin. I got lazy with my face care, and my skin was definitely feeling it. Even though my skin has remained relatively clear with the help of my Spironolactone prescription (that can be another story for another day), I was still having little breakouts here and there. I can blame that on my own laziness, opting for cleaning my face with wipes instead of actually washing and moisturizing.

I figured I’d try blogging about something else besides video games. I’m going to blog about my adventures in taking care of my skin. I’ve been buying all kinds of products, trying new things out, and I’ve been seeing all kinds of improvement. Why not share the knowledge that I’ve obtained so far? Let’s go!

Don’t Use a Towel to Dry Your Face

I recently read an article on Glow Recipe (a website I HIGHLY recommend for buying some Korean beauty products) regarding tips passed down from mothers regarding skin care. One tip mentioned not scrubbing your face dry with a towel (which is something I’ve been incredibly guilty of).

Instead of scrubbing your face dry with a towel, you should pat your skin dry with your fingers. I was a little skeptical at first, but after two days of doing this, I can see why it works. I pat my skin until it’s damp but not dripping, and then I move on to my toner. My skin isn’t all red and irritated like it would be after using a towel, and my toner goes on super easy. If my hands aren’t drying fast enough, I dry my hands off and continue to blot my face until it reaches the right amount of dampness. Then on to the rest of my skincare routine!

I can say that the lack of redness after washing my face combined with the extra hydration my skin gets with the water leaves my skin significantly happier. Give it a try sometime. You won’t regret it!

Cleanse, Tone, Moisturize

If there was one routine I would abide by when it comes to taking care of my face, this would be the minimum: cleanse, tone, and moisturize. Just following these three steps has made an improvement with my skin. Of course, there are more pieces to my skin care routine (exfoliating, masks, serums, etc.), but if there is a minimum recommendation, I would start with these three things.

When it comes to the Cleanse step, I’m still flip-flopping between a couple different cleansers. I haven’t decided on a nighttime cleanser, but I’m really liking the one I use in the morning. Right now I’m using Hey Honey’s Don’t Miss A Spot! Fresh Honey Cleansing Foam. I stick to using my Clarisonic Mia 2 at night when my face needs that deep clean but using Hey Honey’s cleansing foam in the morning with just my hands is an easy way to freshen up my skin before I run out the door. I’ve been using different samples I’ve received with my Mia 2 at night, but I haven’t found just one nighttime cleanser I’d stick with.

As for the Tone step, I’ve also been trying out several products. The one that I’m using right now is one that I got at a salon not too long ago whose name is escaping me right now. I haven’t opened it yet, but I also have belif’s Bergamot Herbal Extract Toner that I’m going to try next. I’ve also had very good experiences using Origins’ Zero Oil™ Pore Purifying Toner. Toners are great for nourishing your skin after cleansing and are a great way to prep your skin for moisturizing!

When I was younger, I never thought about the Moisturize step. My skin was always oily; why would I want to add a product to make it more greasy? I continued to think that way until I actually tried moisturizing my skin. Now my face doesn’t get as oily because I’m replacing the oils that I stripped from my face so my face doesn’t have to overproduce oil to make up for it. Currently, my morning moisturizer is Hada Labo’s Replenishing Hydrator. I still have other moisturizers that I could use, but this one is light and easy, especially before putting on makeup. At night, I’ve been alternating between Lather’s Honey Moisture Mask with Propolis Extract and belif’s The True Cream Aqua Bomb. Both products leave my face feeling happy from when I put it on to when I wake up the next morning.

Three steps may seem like a lot, but integrating those three steps have made a world of difference in my skin. Once you get it into your routine, it’ll seem like nothing. At the end of the day, your skin will thank you for it. Trust me.

New Skin Care Products

Even when I find my holy grail of skin-care products, I still like to try new things now and then. I’ve got a whole slew of new products coming in that I’ll probably end up reviewing on here. I love trying out new products and seeing how they work for me. And hey, they might even work for you, too! You can just call me your skin care guinea pig. (*・∀-)☆

Father’s Day

June 23rd, 2015

I lost my father at the end of last year, not even days after I got married and a little over a month before one of my favorite holidays to celebrate with my dad, Christmas. Father’s Day holds a special place in my heart.

After my father passed away, I was going through some of his things that he kept in a small box next to his favorite chair in the living room. Little notebooks and brushes for my cat Cortana (whom he absolutely adored). What really stood out for me the most were a pile of cards that I got him for various days such as Father’s Day, his birthday, and so on. He had at least two years of cards from me, only me, in this box. My father treasured me more than anything else, and his love means so much to me.

This is the first Father’s Day I’ve had to spend without him. I can definitely feel the empty space in my chest. Things just aren’t the same. My dad is probably the biggest reason I came out okay, and I can’t thank him enough for everything he has ever done for me.

Perhaps this is why I am so easily offended by all the little posts I’ve read about how there are some people out there who genuinely feel like like Father’s Day is a joke. Of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I believe that wholeheartedly, and I still respect other peoples’ opinions. It’s only fair I share my own.

Father’s Day seems to be a touchy subject for some people, especially the ones that have had negative experiences with fathers. I consider myself lucky to have had such a wonderful father. Even if it does happen to be a fake hashtag on Twitter, #EndFathersDay really does hit a sore spot for me. Yes, there are probably a lot of shitty fathers out there who don’t even deserve the title, but is it fair to call and end to something that appreciates those fathers who took care of their families and fully accepted the responsibility of being a parent?

If anything, Mother’s Day is the one that leaves a sour taste in my mouth. My mother isn’t the worst person ever, but she wasn’t the best person, either. The way she raised me contributed to my stunted emotional development that I’m still working on sorting to this day. My father was always the one who provided me with the affection that my mother was incapable of giving. He was the reassuring voice that dulled the critical edge of my mother’s criticisms. He taught me that I was okay exactly the way I was, and as long as I did my best, he was more than proud of me.

I guess I happen see things from the opposite end of the spectrum. I haven’t had all that positive of an experience with my own mother. I’ve known people who have been abused, mistreated, and abandoned by their mothers. I’ve had friends who had only their fathers to raise them when their mothers ran off. Yet you do not hear me yelling at the top of my lungs that Mother’s Day should sod right off because my mother wasn’t the healthiest parent to be raised by. Who am I to say that all mothers are horrible because mine wasn’t all that great to me?

I have a friend who is so much younger than me, yet she is such an inspirational single mother. My grandmother on my father’s side was one of the sweetest ladies alive, and she gave me nothing but love and happiness the entire time she was alive. I just know so many other inspirational mothers and grandmothers who deserve the love and affection they receive on Mother’s Day. My mother does not dictate the behavior of every other mother who deserves recognition; even then, I still cherish my mother for trying.

Just because some father figures were abysmal doesn’t mean we shouldn’t celebrate the other fathers out there who work hard to support their family, care for their children, and really make that difference in peoples’ lives. After all, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

I miss you, dad. I think about you every day. I’m glad I had you in my life, and I’m happy that I got to be as close with you as I was. I can’t begin to tell you how much I appreciate everything you’ve done for me. Thank you for being such a light in my life.

ca·thar·sis

(kə-thär′sĭs)

n. pl. ca·thar·ses (-sēz)

1. Medicine Purgation, especially for the digestive system.
2. A purifying or figurative cleansing of the emotions, especially pity and fear, described by Aristotle as an effect of tragic drama on its audience.
3. A release of emotional tension, as after an overwhelming experience, that restores or refreshes the spirit.
4. Psychology

a. A technique used to relieve tension and anxiety by bringing repressed feelings and fears to consciousness.
b. The therapeutic result of this process; abreaction.

An innumerable amount of factors contribute to the entirety of who we are; however, in the process of moving forward, sometimes we have to take a moment to stop ourselves from habitually looking back when we already know what remains behind.

We need to understand the mistakes we have made in order to prevent future mishaps in the same vein. Yet we cannot draw on these recollections too often; constant dwelling on the errors of our ways hinders us from living in the present. When we fretfully reminisce on events and decisions made in the past, we become stagnant. We are unable to move forward because we’ve chained ourselves to our guilt, our fear, our transgressions, our misapprehensions.

Releasing ourselves from the toxicity clouding our very existences can lead to a variety of reflexive responses, often in paradoxical combinations.

We must remember why we made the choices that we did, particularly based on the circumstances given to us at that very time. Hindsight, as always, has perfect vision. We can spend our entire lives looking back with regret at the decisions we made when we did not have all the tools and information at our disposal. We have to remember how we felt at that time. Even if this decision lead to a tragic mistake, we cannot hold transgressions that occurred against us that were simply beyond our control.

All we can do is accept the choices we have made, take responsibility for the errors that we directly made, and forgive ourselves for the consequences that are genuinely beyond our reach, our ability to mend.

We assume that we have the utmost amount of control when we perform an action within the world, that accidental consequences that would have never normally factored in are our burdens to bear.

We fail to see the irony in expecting perfection in a universe birthed from chaos.

We often forget that, at the end of the day, we are the only ones who have to live with the choices we made, the paths we took, the effort we put in. We forget that the only thing we can genuinely control in the universe is what we do and how we react to what the universe brings back in return.

The universe does not embrace a perfect algorithm as to where you can, without a doubt, provide the perfect action to obtain the desired reaction. We can become well versed in playing the odds, yet we cannot guarantee that every perfectly played interaction will result in success. Even when success looks apparent, we are simply unable to perfectly decipher the silent nuances that keep this game (so to speak) ever changing.

A construct may look and appear structurally sound on paper, yet a singular, almost invisible, fault could just as well rend the whole structure asunder. It may not even be a flaw implemented in creation but a structural anomaly developed over an infinite expanse of time. These elements are beyond our control. To say that the failure or damage to structural integrity is the fault of one person alone (unless purposefully implemented as such) is absurd, yet we find ourselves blaming events, incidents, and accidents on ourselves when our intentions in the whole grand scheme of things were genuinely unadulterated. When others react poorly to a decision we’ve made to care for ourselves, we end up feeling guilty for choosing to make someone else happy instead of doing what needs to be done to take care of ourselves.

The logical fallacies are quite obvious when documented, yet for some reason, in our heads, we feel that others are validated in their consternation towards the pursuit of our own needs. Lost in the moment, we conveniently forget that the people that genuinely care for your well being will not press their agenda on us when we are unable to satisfy our own needs.

We often fail to see the irony in that being made to feel as if we are selfish for genuinely doing what is best to take care of ourselves, when in reality it is that very accuser who is being selfish.

In the end, perception is solely based on the eye of the beholder. Just because someone tells us that something is the way it is does not mean that we have to treat it as the infallible truth. We are able to draw our own conclusions, make our own investigations, and believe what we believe. In the end, it’s all a matter of perspective.

(Author’s Note: Extremism changes the dynamic but not the overall message.)

Nothing in life was ever meant to be static. While it retains its general shape and concept, life is constantly in ebb and flow. Just because something comes in to your life means it will always be there. Just because something leaves your life doesn’t mean it will be gone forever. Even in the toughest of situations, we always have a choice, even if some of the choices are unappealing and not what we want to do.

Life is what we make of it, after all.

Fighting Games, Life, and Video Games.

March 20th, 2014

I haven’t updated here in forever, have I? I guess now is as good as a time as any.

I entered in the local BlazBlue tournament in January. There weren’t that many entrants, but I am happy I came in third place. I’m sure I could have performed a whole lot better if I really focused on working on new combos. The combos I have seem to be holding me through pretty well, but I feel like I’m genuinely limiting my ability if I don’t learn anything new. Those combos that are in muscle memory are pretty well rooted in muscle memory. I think I just need to do something more than what I already have.

Another thing I really need is matchup experience. I have a lot of experience playing against Tyler’s Kokonoe. I have a bit of experience playing against Estevan’s Valkenhayn. I understand how a lot of the other characters work. I have about as much matchup experience as I do from playing online in previous iterations of BlazBlue. When I rolled in to the tournament, I’ve only seen Azrael in play from videos and Score Attack. Not a whole lot of experience otherwise. I locked up pretty good playing against Chavelo’s Azrael. I feel like I would’ve done better if I had more matchup experience, but hindsight is always 20/20.

The Atomic Mesa household hasn’t been streaming a whole lot lately. We did try something different in the past few months, though: we streamed a Vanguard card game tournament. It was a lot of fun, even though we were lacking in streaming gear at the time. The players thought it was an amazing idea, and they all really wanted to play for the stream. We had advertising on the Cardfight! Vanguard Facebook, and we actually had people in the chat discussing what was going on in the game. It was pretty successful! It was a unique experience for us, and I think we’ll be better prepared for stuff like that in the future.

Tyler has been really busy building and modding fight sticks lately. He recently built a custom Melty Blood stick for himself that came out quite amazing. He designed the art himself, put the stick together, and he even put LEDs into the stick. He went through the effort of programming the LEDs, and it paid off. The stick is quite amazing.

Besides the stick he built, he is also building me my waifu (Kuroneko) stick! He has put in so much effort making it perfect, and I am blown away with what he’s done so far. He’s put the entire thing together save for the wiring (we’re still waiting on the wiring harness to come in). I’ll have to post pictures of it once it’s finished–the work he’s done has exceeded my expectations and then some.

I think I would be doing more with things, but having two jobs has been taking up a lot of my time. I work eight hours a day for my main job, then I go home and get things done around the house, then I go and squeeze in however many hours of work for my second job (depending on how much stuff they have for me at the time). I barely have enough time to squish in gaming, much less a social life. Oh, and add going to the gym on a regular basis in there, and… free time? What’s that? I don’t understand what free time is anymore. I like being busy, sure, but maybe this is a bit much.

On the bright side, I have really been using my handwritten journals lately. I haven’t missed a day since I started seriously writing in the daily ones in January. I’ve almost filled my general journal, too. I’m trying to write more, even if it is about stupid stuff. I feel rusty (since all I really work on is formatting and editing these days), but I think I will eventually get a handle on things again.

Welp. I think that was a good start. Now to actually see if I can keep up on this thing…

This Week’s Adventure in BlazBlue…

January 8th, 2014

Last night comprised of me being moral support for Tyler as he started working on more Kokonoe combos. Honestly? I haven’t been practicing any of anything. And yes, the local tournament is coming up on Saturday. All of my practice has come from Estevan, Jamie, and Tyler. Which is nice, believe me, but I don’t think that’s enough. With all these mechanic changes and me trying to break out of old bad muscle memory habits, I really think I need to play more. So, while he was hammering out those combos, I just sat around and watched a bunch of Japanese match vids.

There are so many things I love about fighting games. Some of these things include frame data, combo threads, and match vids. I like seeing other strategies I could be using. I like knowing where I have advantages I’m not using. I also like trying out new things to add to my repertoire. I love observing other people’s play styles. It’s so rewarding.

I guess there were a couple of observations I made while sitting around and drowning myself in research.

Gravity Seed: You would almost think this move doesn’t even exist for my Nu. The only time you’ll see me use it is when I use it ON ACCIDENT. I think this was a residual effect of me playing a really heavy rushdown Lambda (yeah, yeah, I know… it doesn’t make a lick of sense… but apparently it worked well enough because no one expected it). Now that I’ve been taking my zoning seriously… it’s almost like I had this moment where I thought, “why am I letting this go to waste?!” I swear, this would probably save me most of the grief that I’ve been having. Of course, I’m not entirely sure I’ll get this mechanic implemented before the tournament, but I really need to just throw them out. I can go heavy on combos with it later. I had a couple of combos where I did use it, but I don’t even know if those are even viable anymore. Blah. Well, we’ll see, I suppose.

D~C: …now I feel like a total airhead. This used to be a huge staple for me in prior games, and I just kinda forgot about it entirely, especially with my aerial combos. HOW. DID. I. FORGET. THIS. I feel like such a noob.

I’m sure there is more I can add to the list, which I’ll probably do tonight when I’m practicing. I just wanted to make some notes to myself so that I could remind myself of things to remember when I practice later tonight. 🙂

Streaming, Video Games, Streaming Video Games…

January 7th, 2014

Things have been going well in the Team AtomicMESA household. Since we moved to our new place, we hadn’t really done much in the way of streaming. Guess what, though? We’re starting to get back into it on a more serious level. YAY! This is pretty exciting stuff.

Tyler has been doing a lot of research into what we need to kick up our streaming setup a couple notches. We did get ourselves a new capture card (the AVerMedia Live Gamer Portable), and we’re looking into headsets and a mixer. I definitely like the AVerMedia LGP much more than the Roxio Game Capture HD Pro that we were using before. We’re actually going to be streaming a Yu-Gi-Oh card game tournament next month, which will actually be pretty interesting. We’ve been testing our stream with the new BlazBlue: ChronoPhantasma, and it has been going pretty well. We’re also planning on streaming a DiveKick event at our house in the near future. Lots of fun stuff going on.

As mentioned above, we did get ourselves a Japanese copy of BBCP. Let’s just say that I’m… adjusting. Since the transition from Lambda to Nu, I have been suffering through relearning my combos. Sure, some of my combos still manage to work. Due to the the whole mode shift thing with Nu, I still need to adapt to this drastic change.

Pros: I’m zoning more! I tended to confuse people with the fact that I was a real heavy rushdown Lambda player (yeah, I know, it doesn’t make ANY sense). If I hit you, I would break your face in pretty good. If you hit me, well… I’m flimsy. And without any real zoning, I tended to get hit a lot more than not getting hit. With Nu’s Dia form, I was able to utilize her zoning abilities a lot more. Especially with characters like Kokonoe, I was able to keep myself safe. It’s like, I know how to USE these tools, but now they really play to my advantage. Or I just use these tools now, haha.

Cons: Those muscle memory combos aren’t always going to work if I’m in the wrong form. And that does tend to happen. And then I start getting lazy. And sloppy. And let me tell you about all these dropped combos. I’m still adjusting to the reduced hitstop. Which is not bad, let me tell you. The older BB games let me get away with sloppy inputs. This one? Not so much. I like it, though.

Besides fighting games, my world revolves around my 3DS. Which is actually kind of sad, seeing as we have both a PS4 and an Xbox One in our possession. The problem here is the lack of games for either system that we really want to play. On the 3DS, I’ve got Senran Kagura, Pokemon Y, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. Hell, on the Vita I’ve been getting back into Persona 4 Golden. Even though this is my third playthrough of P4, I’m still enjoying it as much as I have the first two times. I mean, I did beat Dead Rising 3 on the One, but come on. The other consoles are really getting most of my love.

We’ve got a local fighting game tournament coming up this upcoming Saturday. Am I gonna enter? Probably. Am I going to do well? Who knows. I haven’t been practicing as much as Tyler has been (and his combos look way more solid than mine do). I guess we’ll see, though.

Woo! Lookit that. A sufficient update. I need to do this more often.
